Tory Bilski’s debut book is WILD HORSES OF THE SUMMER SUN, a travel memoir of Iceland to be published May 7, 2019 by Pegasus Books (New York). She is a travel writer based in Connecticut. Her most recent pieces have appeared in Atlas Obscura, Hartford Courant, Roads & Kingdoms, and Iceland Review. In 2012, she created an award-winning blog, Icelandica, featuring tales of adventure (and misadventure) with a group of fellow women travelers in Iceland. She has had short stories published in The Kenyon Review, Black Warrior Review, 13th Moon, and other literary magazines. She has a B.A. from Oswego State, and a M.A.L.S. from Wesleyan University. She works at Yale University and lives near New Haven, Connecticut, with her family.

“Bilski was drawn to the Icelandic horse standing on a misty hill immediately. A chance encounter while browsing the Web at her desk job started her on a course for an annual excursion to a horse farm. Every year that she could for more than a decade, she made the trip to Iceland with a group of women, connected by their deep love for these beautiful, strong animals. Her memoir is as much about these women, their struggles, and their burgeoning friendships as about the rides they take and their travels together. They gather up a fair share of adventures, from confronting bulls and surviving a stampede to facing the toll of rampant horse flu. Bilski is undoubtedly enamored of the horses, a breed protected by law in Iceland for more than a thousand years, closely watching their actions and recounting their travels together with an almost mystical admiration. But she also closely observes her travel companions, these women with travails both everyday and extraordinary, whose adventures form the core of this rapturous travelogue.” — Bridget Thoreson, BOOKLIST REVIEW
