Bio

Denise Heinze’s debut historical novel is THE BRIEF AND TRUE REPORT OF TEMPERANCE FLOWERDEW.  She wrote this book about Jamestown because she wanted to know what it would have been like to have lived there.  She especially wanted to get to know two remarkable women, Temperance Flowerdew and her servant girl, Lily,  the founding mothers of Jamestown, alone, unmarried, in a hostile wilderness.  How did they do it ?  To find out, Denise took a journey back to 1609 through her imagination, and into language.

A former literature professor and a PhD graduate of Duke University, Denise writes fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. She is the author of a scholarly work on Toni Morrison, and the eco-thriller, SALLY ST. JOHNS.  A descendant of Louisa May Alcott, she lives in North Carolina.
